What is an earwax plug?
An earwax plug, or cerumen impaction, is an accumulation of wax in the ear canal. Cerumen is a natural substance produced by the ear for protection, but when it accumulates in excessive amounts, it can cause a feeling of fullness, hearing loss, discomfort, or tinnitus.
How is an earwax plug treated?
Treatment generally consists of softening the wax, followed by a safe cleaning of the ear.
What causes an earwax plug?
An earwax plug can form for several reasons:
-
Natural accumulation of cerumen (heavier production in some individuals)
-
Use of cotton swabs that push the wax deeper into the ear
-
Narrow ear canal or specific anatomy
-
Wearing earbuds, earplugs, or hearing aids
-
Frequent exposure to water (swimming, bathing, showering): moisture can cause the wax to swell. Swimmers and those regularly exposed to water are at higher risk.
-
Excessive sweating
-
Dusty environments (construction sites, factories, etc.)
-
Prolonged use of hearing aids or closed-back headphones
What are the complications of an earwax plug?
An untreated earwax plug can lead to decreased hearing, a feeling of pressure in the ears, tinnitus, dizziness, pain, or sometimes irritation of the ear canal. Prompt treatment often prevents symptoms from worsening.
How can I prevent earwax plugs?
To prevent earwax plugs, it is recommended to:
-
Avoid cotton swabs that push wax toward the back of the ears
-
Never insert objects into the ears (tweezers, cotton balls, etc.)
-
Allow the ear to clean itself naturally
-
Use oil drops occasionally to help soften wax, especially for those prone to buildup (CAUTION! Do not use drops if you have pain, discharge, or suspect a perforated eardrum)
-
Dry ears thoroughly after swimming or showering
-
Limit prolonged use of earbuds or earplugs
-
Consult a healthcare professional for recurring symptoms
